TOM SKIPP Interview

dresdenIf there’s one thing that has stood out with the launch of OMD’s 2013 album release English Electric it’s the design aspect of the album and subsequent releases. From the FAC6 homage of the limited edition metal box set to the eye-catching 10″ picture disc EP for The Future Will Be Silent through to the industrial sensibility for the sleeve to Dresden, this current OMD phase has been marked by some notable artwork.

Designer TOM SKIPP has previously worked on designs for a variety of music outfits such as Kasabian, The Music and The Invisible, but this marks his first work for OMD. Messages chatted to Tom about the design process involved with English Electric and working alongside legendary OMD and Factory designer Peter Saville… More Inside  »

DRESDEN remix by JOHN FOXX & THE MATHS

dresden_promoThe forthcoming second single from ENGLISH ELECTRIC has been remixed by JOHN FOXX AND THE MATHS (who are due to support OMD on tour later this month and in May).

Over at The Quietus, John Foxx says of the remix: “OMG! – its OMD! – The Maths have gone exponential. Channelling the spirit of J.D. Ballard via Joe Meek’s ‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’, here comes Foxxy with a toxic takeaway delivered by Benge on a burning Buchla. A strangle tango for mangled minds in tangled times.”

The single, released on May 27 via 100% Records, will include B-side ‘Time Burns’, in addition to remixes by Mike Jolly and Bounce Darkside, while the iTunes bundle comes with a reworking by Zebra and Snake.

OMD’s ANDY McCLUSKEY Discusses English Electric

Andy_by_Tom-OxleyOMD’s ‘English Electric’ is genuinely a stunning return to form. Utilising their KRAFTWERK, NEU! and ENO influenced avant pop template, the original creative nucleus of Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey have married their classic sound to glitch techniques, modern computer voice generators and sympathetic contemporary production for a wonderfully cohesive work.

Andy McCluskey was interviewed for the launch edition of the new iPad publication Electronic Sound. Here is an edited transcript of that interview which primarily consists of text not used in the finished article entitled ‘OMD – Electric Blue’… More Inside  » [via The Electricity Club]

DRESDEN to be second English Electric single

dresden_promoDresden has been selected as the second single release from the new OMD album English Electric and follows on from Metroland.

Dresden dates back to 2010 and originally emerged during the History Of Modern sessions. However, the song lacked lyrics at the time, hence being dropped from History Of Modern. Andy has described the song as “very OMD” and it was one of the English Electric tracks originally selected as a possible single. The single release of Dresden will feature a shorter radio edit of the song.

Promo copies of Dresden are already doing the rounds, notably on eBay, and suggest a release date of 20th May for the single. No details on additional tracks have been released as yet.

MARSHEAUX Inhale

marsheaux_cover-inhaleWith only the inevitable rarities collection ‘E-Bay Queen Is Dead’ in 2012 to fill in the void, MARSHEAUX’s new album ‘Inhale’ has been a long time coming. And it would appear that the Greek financial crisis has loomed heavy over its making with moodier, midtempo numbers taking centre stage.

If 2007’s ‘Peek-A-Boo’ saw the ‘E-Bay Queen’ reach adulthood and ‘Lumineux Noir’ was the carefree but intense period studying for a BA, then ‘Inhale’ is the reality of having to pay off the university loan! More Inside »[via The Electricity Club]

ENGLISH ELECTRIC – The Messages Review

packshot_for_websites2The release of History Of Modern in 2010, which effectively marked OMD’s revival with the classic line-up, could have been viewed as setting up the template for OMD’s sound in the 21st Century.

But if OMD can be said to have one particular trait, it’s the ability to continually surprise. English Electric does exactly this with the presentation of an album that is both consistently good and surprisingly contemporary. More Inside  »
