As with any planned album release, the sleeve design may go through a number of different variations. Andy McCluskey had been unsatisfied with the sleeve design for the OMD Peel Sessions
and Navigation: the Omd B Sides
, considering it to be too much like an 80's 12" sleeve.
When the idea of the B-Sides album was in production however, there were no definite plans regarding the sleeve design. Andy had initially spoken to Peter Saville with a view to getting the original OMD designer back on the team for the B-Sides sleeve. But with a restricted budget (both the Peel Sessions
and Navigation
were produced for Virgins mid-price range) Saville declined the job.
Andy asked Arc23 - then responsible for the design of the Official OMD Website - to produce a suitable design for Navigation. Although a whole series of variations were produced, both Andy and Virgin were more drawn to the original OMD Website splash page idea which resulted in the final sleeve design that features on Navigation
. In fact, the design concept was based on Peter Saville and Ben Kelly's original and striking 'lozenge' idea, but rotated into a 3D design to update the theme.
The designs featured here show some of those variations that were suggested as possible sleeves.
